POLITICS: Castañeda carves out lead

The popular mayor of Lima, Luis Castañeda, is opening up a gap at the head of opinion polls for the presidential elections in 2011. Castañeda received 30% support in a survey carried out by the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú in late November. He was followed by Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of convicted former president Alberto Fujimori, on 18%. Ollanta Humala, the leader of the Partido Nacionalista Peruano (PNP), who took incumbent president Alan Garcí­a to a second round in the 2006 elections, came third on 15%, with the leader of the conservative Partido Popular Cristiano (PPC), Lourdes Flores, on 10%.
