ECUADOR: Constituent assembly to supercede congress


On 22 June four legislators from the government-allied Bloque de la Dignidad Nacional (BDN) abandoned the bloc, meaning the government lost its majority in congress. A day later, President Rafael Correa expressed his hope that the constituent assembly, due to be elected in September, will dissolve congress as soon as it begins sitting. Previously, Correa had argued that the two bodies could run simultaneously.
