In brief: Mexico’s gov’t unveils funds to address Guadalajara water crisis

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the federal government will provide M$12bn - M$13bn (US$638m-US$691m) to guarantee the supply of drinking water in the metropolitan area of Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state, which she said would benefit millions of residents. She also announced that the Jalisco state government would allocate around M$7.5bn for the construction of a water purification plant. The announcements come as the federal and state governments have been under significant pressure to address the poor quality of drinking water in Guadalajara, following protests earlier this month, during which violent clashes with security forces resulted in dozens of arrests and raised concerns about the use of force by police officers.
