*Brazilian retail giant Lojas Americanas has concluded the proceedings for its restructuring process resulting from its
bankruptcy filing in 2023. The scandal-ridden retailer, which has faced
fraud allegations, released a statement yesterday to inform shareholders and the market that a state court in Rio de Janeiro had formally declared the end of the bankruptcy proceedings. It announced the
“fulfilment of all obligations” in a
“judicial reorganisation plan” that was approved by the court and creditors in 2024. Americanas hailed the decision yesterday as an
“important milestone” which
“ushers in a new phase” for the business. The struggles of Americanas also come amid a
broader crisis in Brazil’s retail sector driven by a range of factors such as digital disruption and the economic impacts of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, with another major traditional retailer, Casas Bahia, also declaring bankruptcy in August this year.
