*Mexico’s agricultural ministry (Sader) has announced it is suspending imports of poultry products from Brazil due to an outbreak of Newcastle disease in Nova Itaberaba municipality, Santa Catarina state. Sader said that the national service for agrifood health, safety, and quality (Senasica) had established the measure in accordance with international protocols, in order to protect national poultry production. The decision came after Brazil’s ministry for agriculture and farming (Mapa) confirmed the outbreak of Newcastle, a highly contagious and viral disease similar to avian flu, in a commercial broiler farm located in Santa Catarina. The suspension prevents the entry of poultry meat, offal, songbirds, and ornamental birds, as well as poultry breeding stock such as fertile eggs and chicks up to three days old from Brazil. The measure applies to both commercial imports and products carried by tourists. Brazil is the world’s largest chicken meat exporter, with total exports of 5.3m tonnes in 2025, 36.5% of the global share, totalling US$9.79bn, according to Brazilian meat industry association, Associação Brasileira de Proteína Animal (Abpa).
