Yamandú Orsi has signed an agreement with Spanish energy company Solaria Energía y Media Ambiente to invest US$5.7bn in the development of data centres. In a press release, the government hailed this as the largest investment Uruguay has ever received. Of the total sum, US$5.5bn will be allocated for data centre development, while US$200m will be invested in solar energy installation. The facilities will be distributed across the departments of Canelones, San José, and Florida. President Orsi said yesterday that this infrastructure development will boost the local economy and employment in the interior of the country, with the construction phase expected to create 3,100 jobs until 2029, after which a further 1,500 permanent jobs will be created.
