In brief: Cuba’s inflation up year-on-year, down in monthly terms

*Cuba’s national statistics office (Onei) has released the consumer price index for September, putting monthly inflation at 3.37%, down from 4.92% in August. This brought the annual inflation rate to 28.44%, up from 25.19% in August. The latest inflation figures come as Cuba continues to face a severe economic crisis, which has been exacerbated by the maximum pressure campaign applied by the US administration led by President Donald Trump which includes an effective fuel blockade and multiple sanctions, as part of efforts to force its economic and political opening. Amid ongoing concerns about the humanitarian impact of this policy, yesterday, Cáritas Cuba, the Cuban branch of Caritas, the Catholic Church’s humanitarian and social arm, announced another shipment of humanitarian aid had arrived in Cuba, which will be distributed initially to 700 of 2,100 vulnerable families in Matanzas province. The shipment, which includes boxes of essential food supplies and personal hygiene products, is part of a US$100m humanitarian assistance package announced in May by Washington, which is being distributed by Caritas. The aid is intended to bypass the Cuban government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel and assist “the Cuban people”.
