*Mexican media conglomerate Grupo Televisa and Fintech Holdings, a private investment firm owned by the Mexican billionaire
David Martínez, have reached an agreement to buy the Mexican unit of US telecommunications company AT&T for US$2bn. In a filing submitted to Mexico’s stock exchange (BMV), the companies state they expect to finance the acquisition through a combination of available cash and non-recourse secured debt financing. The filing notes that AT&T México is the second biggest mobile operator in the country, with approximately 24.7m subscribers as of December. It provides mobile phone services, internet, and
“added-value services” under concessions granted by the transport and communications ministry (SICT). As of the end of last year, AT&T México reported consolidated income of more than M$85.4bn (US$4.65bn) and operating profits of M$1.4bn. Televisa and Fintech expect the transaction will close in the first quarter of 2027, contingent on regulatory approval. The deal is set to rival the dominance of Mexican telecoms giant América Móvil, which is owned by Mexico’s richest man,
Carlos Slim.
