*Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released the latest figures for its consumer price index (IPC), showing a monthly inflation rate of 1.9% in September while annual inflation stood at 33.4%. The monthly figure is up from 1.7% in August while the annual figure is down from 33.5%. The monthly rate is in line with the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg. Of the 12 categories of products and services measured by Indec, the greatest monthly price increases were registered in housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels (+3.1%), education (+3.0%), and communication (2.5%). Economy Minister
Luis Caputo hailed the results on social media, saying the monthly inflation rate was the lowest for the month of September since 2017. The latest inflation figures come as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) revised down its growth projections for Argentina in its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) report, released yesterday, to 2.1% in 2026 and 3.5% in 2027. This is down from 3.5% and 4.0% respectively in its previous (July) report. Speaking yesterday, the deputy director of the IMF’s research department,
Petya Koeva Brooks, said that the downward revision owed to “
the weaker activity that we've already observed through the third quarter of this year”, but revealed expectations that growth would “
start recovering in the last quarter of the year, and to strengthen further in 2027, 2028.” She said that this “
recovery is due to the positive terms of trade that we are expecting, as well as the easing of financial conditions, as well as the pickup in investment, which is also expected in our forecast”.
