*Mexican airport operator Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP) has announced the closure of its airports in the resort cities of Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco state, and Manzanillo, Colima state, due to Hurricane Simón. The hurricane has been moving parallel to Mexico’s Pacific coast, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. GAP announced yesterday that the international airport in Puerto Vallarta, a major tourist destination, would remain closed until 8am (local time) on 13 October
“due to Hurricane Simón’s slow movement and the weather conditions forecast for the region”. It advised those with flights scheduled during this period to contact the airline directly. The airport was initially closed from 5pm on 10 October, with operations initially due to restart at 8am on 12 October. On 10 October GAP also announced that all commercial flight operations had been suspended at the international airport in Manzanillo, a busy port city and beach destination. It announced yesterday that the airport would remain closed for the duration of 11 October. Yesterday President
Claudia Sheinbaum urged all residents of coastal municipalities in Jalisco, Colima, Nayarit, and Michoacán states
“to remain in shelter until an official announcement is made that the danger has passed”. She stated that the hurricane was located 95km west of Manzanillo and 175km south-southeast of Cabo Corrientes, Jalisco, with
“precautionary evacuations to safe areas” continuing. The US National Hurricane Center announced today (12 October) that the hurricane had been downgraded from category 4 to category 3 and was expected to move inland across west-central Mexico
