In brief: Dominican Republic hails rise in tourism

*The Dominican Republic’s tourism ministry has released new figures showing that 9.24m tourists visited the country from January to September 2026, which it said was up 7.5% on the same period of 2025. Tourism Minister David Collado presented the figures in the coastal Puerto Plata province, where he also announced an investment of RD$168.4m (US$2.79m) in the reconstruction and paving of streets in Maimón municipality to help boost it as a tourist destination. The road project is part of the paving and road reconstruction plan for the province of Puerto Plata, with a total investment of RD$1.3bn. While in Puerto Plata, Collado also welcomed the docking of the Disney Dream cruise ship at the port of Taíno Bay. Collado said this was the first time a Disney Cruise Line ship had arrived in the Dominican Republic, with the country “now included in the itineraries of one of the world’s most renowned cruise lines”. The ship carries approximately 4,000 people – mostly families – and about 1,467 crew members.
