In brief: Panama boosts ties with Singapore

*Panama’s main international airport, Tocumen International, in Panama City has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SATS, a Singapore-headquartered air cargo handling, ground services, and inflight catering company. Under the agreement, the two parties will “explore new opportunities for growth in air cargo and strengthen trade connectivity between Asia and the Americas”. The MoU was signed as part of President José Raúl Mulino’s visit to Singapore, which has seen him meet with Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who noted that Panama was the first Latin American country to sign a free trade agreement with Singapore, in 2006. He added that “there is much more we can do together, especially in logistics, given our roles as major air and maritime hubs”, noting that the SATS and Tocumen MoU looks to “deepen cooperation in air connectivity and cargo logistics” and saying the countries were also looking to expand their partnership in trade. Mulino also visited the Tuas container terminal on Singapore’s southwest coast. According to Mulino, the terminal is set to become the world’s largest fully automated container port and “serves as a model for Panama”. He added that, “Panama is already the logistics hub of the Americas” citing the Panama Canal and the Colón free-trade zone, among other things. “We are working to better leverage our strengths, open new markets, and create more jobs for Panamanians,” he added. Following his visit to Singapore from 3-5 October, Mulino travelled to Vietnam, where he will reportedly meet the country’s top political leader, To Lam.
