*Guatemala and Taiwan have held a meeting to promote bilateral investment and business ties during a visit to Guatemala by Taiwan’s Foreign Minister
Lin Chia-lung, who was accompanied by a delegation of 32 Taiwanese businesspeople, along with academics and researchers. According to Guatemala’s state news agency Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias (AGN), during the Guatemala-Taiwan Joint Economic Meeting (Cieca–Cacif) and Investment Forum, the two sides inked three agreements of understanding and economic cooperation aimed at strengthening links between their business sectors. During his visit, which was also intended to revise cooperation projects and expand opportunities in areas such as trade, investment, technology, health, and education, Lin met his Guatemalan counterpart
Carlos Ramiro Martínez and the two held what was the first bilateral political consultation after the mechanism was established by a memorandum signed during a
visit to Taiwan by Guatemala’s President
Bernardo Arévalo in June 2025. Following the meeting with Ramiro, Lin said that the Taiwanese business delegation had met with representatives from sectors including green energy and intelligent transport; artificial intelligence, digital and space technology; biotechnology, health and medicine; tourism; and finance and trade. He said that over the past three years, the Taiwanese government had worked on over 70 projects for Guatemala with the public and private sectors. Along with Belize, which Lin visited on 27 September where he met Prime Minister
John Briceño, and his Belizean peer,
Francis Fonseca, among others, Guatemala is the only other country in Central America, previously a bastion of support for Taiwan, to maintain relations with Taipei, after Honduras became the latest country to make the switch to mainland China in 2023.
