*International Monetary Fund (IMF) spokesperson
Julie Kozack has said that the IMF is considering establishing a
“local presence in Venezuela to facilitate… technical cooperation and capacity development”. Her comments came in the wake of
a meeting between Venezuela’s President
Delcy Rodríguez and the IMF’s managing director,
Kristalina Georgieva, in New York on 21 September on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly. Kozack said that they discussed
“progress on the reengagement between the IMF and Venezuela” and
“how the IMF can continue to support Venezuela through capacity development and policy advice”. She said that key areas for technical cooperation include
“macroeconomic statistics, monetary operations, foreign exchange operations, treasury operations, and tax administration”. Kozack emphasised, however, that currently
“the Venezuelan authorities have not requested an IMF programme, nor have they requested financing from the IMF”.
