PERU: Fujimori faces familiar fate

The popularity of Peru’s President Keiko Fujimori was fleeting. Political honeymoons in Peru tend to be short-lived and Fujimori’s has been no different. The swift verdict of a public that has witnessed a succession of ten presidents in 10 years is that she offers nothing new. Violent crime has actually increased since she took office with an aggressive plan to confront it – an escalation not unlike that sparked by President Daniel Noboa in Ecuador. Her demand for legislative powers to govern by decree to confront this challenge, inter alia, has sparked criticism. While other recent Peruvian heads of state have requested such powers, her demands at the outset of her presidency evoked memories of the authoritarianism of her father, Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).
