*Cuba’s government has announced a third donation of 5,000 solar power kits from China, following similar donations
in August and November 2025. According to President
Miguel Díaz-Canel, this donation will provide 200MW of energy to be used for the country’s water pumping system, meaning it is no longer dependent on the national electricity system (SEN). Díaz-Canel said that so far Cuba had installed 1,418MW of solar energy capacity, distributed across 144 solar parks, with the objective to close the year with over 1,500MW. He said that renewable energy currently accounts for 21.4% of electricity generated in the country. As regards wind energy, he said that a park with 22 wind generators with 33MW capacity was being built. He also said that in Cuba currently 15,404 electric vehicles and over 1.5m electric motorbikes are in circulation, while 44 solineras (solar-powered charging station) and 64 charging stations have been installed. According to Díaz-Canel, renewable energy sources now power 99% of polyclinics, 47% of hospitals, and 89% of care homes and day facilities for the elderly, among other sectors. This drive towards renewable energy comes as Cuba is facing its worst energy crisis in decades, stemming from long-running factors such as crumbling energy infrastructure and exacerbated by Washington’s current maximum pressure campaign, which includes an effective fuel blockade and sanctions, among other things, aimed at forcing political and economic reforms.
