*Business chambers in Uruguay have condemned continued interruptions of the country’s port services. In a joint statement, 28 industry organisations state the disruptions are “unsustainable for production, trade and the economy of the country”, calling for an “urgent and definitive response”. According to the statement, 15 interruptions have been registered in the last 16 months at the port of Montevideo, Uruguay’s largest and most commercially significant deep-water port, with the port’s container terminal, Terminal Cuenca del Plata (TCP), particularly affected. This is largely due to an ongoing labour dispute involving the port workers’ union (Supra) over the renewal of a collective bargaining contract, among other issues. However, the statement also extends to all the country’s ports and their activities, saying that in 2026, 44 days have been affected by interruptions, exceeding the 35 days in 2025, and affecting 70% of container movements. The statement warns of the “seriousness, urgency and implications of the current crisis of production and foreign trade”, which they say had been unleashed by the interruptions. The chambers equally highlight the impact on the country’s international image, saying that the intermittent closures of “our main connection to the world ends up eroding the trust of our clients, damaging the image of our country, and conspiring against the very policies of competitivity and intentions of economic growth that the government is seeking to promote”. The organisations stress that an “operational, stable, predictable, and trustworthy port system is essential”, saying that preserving such a system is a “collective responsibility”.
