*Transportadora de Gas del Norte (TGN), Argentina’s regional gas pipeline operator, has announced a total investment of up to US$2.2bn to build the Manuel Belgrano gas pipeline and related facilities. The project is aimed at maximising the value of gas produced by Argentina’s giant Vaca Muerta shale oil and gas field, addressing a gas supply deficit in the country’s central, northern, and coastal regions, and unlocking gas exports. The new 753km pipeline will run from the Tratayén gas processing plant in Neuquén province to the La Carlota node in Córdoba province at a cost of US$1.5bn. Combined with related upgrades to TGN’s existing network, the total investment reaches US$2.2bn. The pipeline, which will also pass through the provinces of Río Negro, La Pampa, and San Luis, is designed for an initial supply capacity of about 13m cubic metres per day and is expected to become operational in April 2029. TGN said the project would replace roughly US$700m in annual imports of liquid fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) and diesel, while creating an estimated US$450m a year in opportunities for gas exports to neighbouring countries. Associated works will also increase the capacity of the TGN system by up to 14m cubic metres, including the construction of 147km of 30-inch pipeline loops in the provinces of Córdoba, Santa Fe, Catamarca, Santiago del Estero, and Tucumán. TGN CEO
Horacio Pizarro said the project reflected “
an extraordinary opportunity to transform gas from Vaca Muerta into competitive energy”. Construction is expected to generate 2,000 jobs at peak activity. TGN said the project would likely be submitted to the economy ministry under the large investment incentive regime (Rigi).
