*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has said the Vivienda para el Bienestar (Housing for Wellbeing) programme will benefit 12m families over her six-year term, representing annual investment of close to 1.2% of GDP. She estimated some 2.4m jobs are linked to the programme, calculating roughly four jobs per home built. Edna Elena Vega Rangel, the head of the agrarian, territorial, and urban development ministry (Sedatu), said the government has now signed contracts for 667,000 new homes across 766 projects nationwide, around a third of its six-year target of 1.8m homes. Of those, 277,000 are currently being built and 89,000 have been handed to families. Total spending on construction so far stands at M$75.9bn (US$4.43bn). The government has also delivered 717,000 home improvement grants, or 40% of its 1.8m goal, and has issued 337,000 property deeds, a third of its 1m target. Infonavit, the state workers’ housing fund, said its bad loan portfolio has fallen from 29% to 27% between September 2024, the month before Sheinbaum took office, and August 2026, from M$608bn to M$597bn. Infonavit’s director, Octavio Romero Oropeza, said 4.86m unpayable loans have been restructured, of which 536,000 were written off entirely and the remainder given lower interest rates and fixed monthly payments.
