*Venezuela’s President Delcy Rodríguez has travelled to Suriname for talks with President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons. In a social media post on 12 September, Geerlings-Simons wrote that “a key topic of discussion” was “the further development of Suriname’s oil and gas sector”, noting that “Venezuela possesses extensive experience in this sector and has offered support and knowledge exchange to Suriname.” She added that “particular attention was also paid to agriculture, livestock farming, and fisheries” and “the possibility of purchasing urea at an affordable price to support our farmers”. Although few details were made public, Geerlings-Simons said that two agreements, four letters of intent, three cooperation frameworks, and one joint declaration had been signed. Rodríguez, meanwhile, said that they signed “important agreements in different areas of cooperation”, writing on social media that “we reaffirmed our willingness to advance a joint cooperation agenda in strategic areas”. Since taking office in January, Rodríguez has made a concerted effort to shore up ties with the Caribbean Community (Caricom), of which Suriname is a member, and which was formerly a key bastion of support for Venezuela’s ruling Chavista movement due to Venezuela’s provision of discounted oil under the PetroCaribe scheme.
