*Cuba’s Prime Minister Manuel Marrero has said that 155 (88%) of the 176 economic reforms outlined in an economic reform package unveiled by the Partido Comunista de Cuba (PCC) government in June have legal backing, with a further 17 pieces of legislation expected to be approved this month. The reform package, which liberalises the economy, was approved as part of efforts to appease the US government led by President Donald Trump which is carrying out a maximum pressure campaign on the island to force its political and economic opening. The PCC government’s latest claims of progress come as US-based non-partisan organisation Cuba Study Group has previously challenged its declared rate of progress. On 20 August it released a report questioning the official implementation rate given by Marrero on 29 July of 62.5%, citing tracking of measures reported in the official gazette by independent digital media outlet elTOQUE which puts the rate at 9.1% as of 5 August.
