*Venezuela has reported crude oil production of 1.201m barrels per day (bpd) in August, according to the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries' (Opec) latest monthly oil market report. The figure was barely changed from July’s 1.200m bpd, based on the “direct communication” data Venezuela submits to Opec. Opec’s own estimate, based on secondary sources, put Venezuelan production somewhat lower, at 1.145m bpd in August, up from 1.122m bpd in July, an increase of 23,000 bpd month-on-month. This comes amid controversy over the recent oil agreement struck with the US and growing backlash within Venezuela over a social media post this month in which US President Donald Trump claimed control over 17 Venezuelan oilfields, calling them a “gift from Venezuela to the people of the United States.” Venezuela’s Hydrocarbons Minister Paula Henao responded this week by insisting that the country retains “control and ownership” of its oil reserves.
