In brief: Mexico’s inflation picks up

*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has released new figures for its consumer price index, showing a monthly inflation rate of 0.20% in August, while annual inflation stood at 3.26%, within the central bank (Banxico)’s target of 3% ± 1.0 percentage point. This is up from monthly inflation of 0.03% in July, and monthly deflation of 0.27% in June. Annual inflation is also up from 3.12% in July and 3.37% in June, with the August figure signalling the first time the annual rate has accelerated in five months. Nevertheless, the annual figure is below the 3.30% median estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. Core inflation, which excludes volatile items such as food and energy, stood at 0.16% in monthly terms and 3.88% in annual terms, although this is down from 0.23% recorded in July in monthly terms and 3.95% in annual terms. The latest figures come as Banxico held its benchmark interest rate at 6.50% for the second consecutive occasion on 6 August.
