*The Dominican Republic’s foreign ministry (Mirex) has announced the start of talks with the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) regarding tariffs, among other issues, aimed at “
further strengthening economic and trade relations between both countries and advancing topics of common interest”. According to a Mirex press release, the meeting was led by the Dominican Republic’s new foreign minister,
Víctor Bisonó, and Deputy US Trade Representative
Jeffrey Goettman. Like much of the region, the Dominican Republic is facing US tariffs, including those most recently stemming from President
Donald Trump’s 10%-12.5% tariff package
announced in July, which the Dominican government led by President
Luis Abinader has sought to redress, and which come despite the Dominican Republic-Central America-US Free Trade Agreement (Cafta-DR) trade deal which remains in place. According to Mirex, the latest talks are part of an engagement agenda that Bisonó has been pursuing with the US since taking office on 16 August. In recent weeks he has held exchanges with Director for Western Hemisphere Affairs at the National Security Council
Patrick Nelson; Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs
Juan Pablo Segura; and Senior Advisor for Western Hemisphere Affairs
Viviana Bovo. According to Mirex Dominican exports last year totalled US$14.65bn, of which 48.6% went to the US, “
consolidating it as the main market for national exports”. According to the same press release, foreign direct investment (FDI) from the US reached US$1.04bn last year.
