Bernardo Arévalo has announced plans to present a new legislative initiative before congress which would establish a maximum price of Q39 (US$5.10) per gallon of diesel for consumers. He said that this was aimed at mitigating the impact of international fuel prices stemming from the war in the Middle East. Arévalo’s announcement, which follows
earlier subsidies announced by the government in response to high fuel prices, comes as he is facing protests over high fuel costs, with blockades of national roads (since lifted) which began at the
end of August, and further protests due to take place in the capital, Guatemala City today (8 October) and tomorrow from leading indigenous organisation 48 Cantones de Totonicapán (48 Cantones) and two transport associations representing bus companies and operators, Gremial de Transportistas de Rutas Cortas Extraurbanas (Gretrucex) and Gremial de Transporte Extraurbano de Pasajeros (Gretexpa).
