*Mexico’s agricultural ministry (Sader) has announced that it has released 73.9m sterile flies in a bid to combat the New World Screwworm (NWS) outbreak. It stated that, as a result of its efforts, cases of the NWS had fallen by 71% in the northern state of Chihuahua, from 227 to 64 active cases. It added that more than 100,000 animals had been treated and almost 4,000 ranches inspected, while 3,675 producers had been trained in early detection techniques. The NWS outbreak prompted the US to shutter the border to Mexican livestock imports in July 2025, with imports partially resuming on 24 August this year. The port of Douglas, Arizona, on the border with the Mexican town of Agua Prieta, Sonora state, was the first to reopen, with the US considering reopening ports of entry in New Mexico, bordering Chihuahua, “after evaluating the success of the initial reopening and potential impacts or risk assessment changes”.
