Paz shakes up Bolivia’s police command

Bolivia’s President Rodrigo Paz swore in a new high command of the national police on 31 August. The new police commander, Adrián Álvarez, takes over from Mirko Sokol whose resignation was accepted by Paz days earlier. The interior minister, Marco Antonio Oviedo, tried to put a positive gloss on Sokol’s tenure, but he departed under a cloud, with several recent developments strongly suggesting that the decision was effectively taken out of Sokol’s hands by the Paz administration.
