*US Energy Secretary
Chris Wright has travelled to Venezuela following the announcement last week of
a deal between the US and Venezuelan governments that will massively expand US access to Venezuelan crude. Wright’s visit comes amid reports that US oil firm Chevron is finalising a separate deal that will significantly expand its Venezuela operations by adding two major oilfields in the Orinoco Belt. According to a Bloomberg report published yesterday, Chevron’s deal will be the largest of several that are expected to be announced in the coming days. Speaking to reporters in Caracas, Wright said that he
“absolutely” expects other firms to announce investment plans in Venezuela, saying that Washington’s goal is to
“grow the flow of private capital from a great number of American businesses” and that
“we want to see a lot of investment coming from the United States into Venezuela to grow opportunity and prosperity for Venezuelans and Americans, and for energy consumers around the world”. Wright’s visit came as progress began to be made with regard to agreements announced last month following US-backed talks between President
Delcy Rodríguez’s government and the political opposition. The national assembly yesterday voted unanimously to approve part of the reform of the supreme court (TSJ) which was agreed during the talks. This reportedly related to the expansion of the committee which nominates candidates for the TSJ, increasing the committee from 21 to 23 members and giving an increased role to civil society.
