*Brazilian government officials have affirmed their commitment to continuing discussions with the US government regarding the tariffs that have been applied on Brazilian goods. Yesterday Brazil’s foreign minister, Mauro Vieira, and minister for development, industry, trade, and services, Márcio Elias Rosa, held a virtual meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Although the Brazilian officials reiterated their criticisms of the US decision to impose tariffs and the justifications for them, such as claims of Brazil’s unfair trade practices and failure to enforce rules against forced labour, the ministers agreed with Greer to hold more ministerial-level talks in the coming weeks. Bilateral tensions had been intensifying in recent months. In addition to the imposition of new tariffs in July, diplomatic relations soured amid the US decision to designate Brazil’s most powerful criminal organisations as terrorist groups, a move opposed by the Brazilian government, as well as the US decision to revoke the visa of Brazil’s ambassador in Washington, among other issues. However, on 21 August President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva held a phone call with US President Donald Trump in an apparent attempt to ease tensions and push for a resumption of tariff talks.
