Peru’s Fujimori plays it safe with her plan for government
Since taking office on 28 July following a deeply divisive election campaign, Peru’s President Keiko Fujimori has been notably conciliatory in her rhetoric and avoided taking provocative early steps. This stance continued in the 20 August address to congress by her prime minister, Luis Galarreta, as he set out the government’s plan for the 2026-2031 presidential term. The speech focused on key issues of voter concern such as security and the economy, and also included a section devoted to the new government’s commitment to democracy – a concern of the opposition amid memories of the dictatorial rule of Keiko’s father, Alberto Fujimori (1990-2000).
