*Uruguay’s national statistics institute (INE) has released new figures showing that the country’s unemployment rate in the first half of 2026 stood at 7.4%. This marks an increase compared to the unemployment rate of 7.1% registered for the second half of 2025 but a decrease from 7.8% in the first half of last year. The underemployment rate was 8.9%, down from 9.4% in the second half of 2025 and 9.2% in the first half of 2025. Regarding gender disparity, the unemployment rate for men stood at 6.2% in the first half of this year, while unemployment among women was at 8.8%. The INE figures also showed persistent racial inequality with 9.8% unemployment among people who identify as black, while the rate for people who identify as white was 7.1%. Regarding age categories, unemployment remains higher for younger people, with the INE’s data showing unemployment rates of 24.3% for people aged 14-24, 9.8% for ages 25-29, 6.8% for ages 30-34, 4.2% for 35-44, 4.1% for 45-54, 3.6% for 55-64, and 2.3% for people aged 65 and above.
