Costa Rica’s President Laura Fernández filed criminal charges against four magistrates on the supreme court on 3 August for alleged perversion of the course of justice. In a highly charged social media post, Fernández voiced scathing criticism of the magistrates, who sit on the constitutional chamber of the supreme court, in tones redolent of her mentor, former president Rodrigo Chaves (2022-2026), now her chief lieutenant. Branding the magistrates “coup plotters”, Fernández said their decision to vote to extend the appointment of alternates to the constitutional chamber on 30 July constituted a clear dereliction of duty by usurping the functions of the legislative assembly.
