PARAGUAY: Deepening US ties

Diplomatic relations between Paraguay and the US have gone from strength to strength under the governments of President Santiago Peña and President Donald Trump. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described the “continued growth” in bilateral relations as “incredible” on receiving Paraguay’s vice president and foreign minister, Pedro Alliana and Rubén Ramírez Lezcano, respectively, in Washington DC on 4 August. During the visit, the two countries signed a new agreement on civil nuclear cooperation and discussed further deepening regional security cooperation, in a reflection of the growing alignment between the Trump administration and many right-leaning governments across the region.
