PERU: Fujimori avoids ruffling feathers in first week
Keiko Fujimori has taken a conciliatory approach in the week since she was sworn in as Peru’s new president on 28 July. This has ranged from the diplomatic sphere, with the prospect of a restoration of ties with Mexico, to the domestic, with reassurances that labour rights will not be affected by her deregulation plans and hints at benevolence for imprisoned political heavyweights. Following a razor-thin election victory, Fujimori may have decided to wade slowly into the treacherous waters of Peruvian governance, rather than plunge head-first with her promise of radical changes to economic and security policy.
