*Technical experts from the US Department of Energy have carried out an inspection of the Simón Bolívar hydroelectric plant in Angostura municipality, Bolívar state, ahead of a planned overhaul of Venezuela’s electricity infrastructure. In a social media post, the US embassy in Caracas said on 3 August that a technical diagnosis, carried out in partnership with Venezuela’s electricity ministry and state power firm Corpoelec, “will help define a roadmap for the modernisation of the national electricity system”. This, it said, will “support Venezuela’s economic recovery within the framework of… [the] three-phase plan” devised by the US, which consists of stabilisation, recovery, and democratic transition. President Delcy Rodríguez also carried out an inspection of the Termocarabobo thermoelectric plant in Puerto Cabello municipality, Carabobo state, which she said was one of the facilities most damaged by the 24 June twin earthquakes. Rodríguez said that since the earthquakes, “we have recovered 300 of the 600 megawatts that Termocarabobo provided”.
