CHILE: Mega reform clears key hurdle but faces new one

Chile’s President José Antonio Kast’s flagship mega reform, known as the ‘reconstruction and economic and social development’ bill, cleared the lower chamber this week almost intact. It is not a done deal yet, however, as one of the articles amended by the senate was shot down by the lower chamber and will now have to go to a joint committee. Kast himself may want to veto four of the articles inserted by the left-wing opposition, which, for good measure, filed a legal challenge to specific articles before the constitutional tribunal.
