In brief: Slight monthly increase in Brazil’s retail sales

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the retail sales figures for May, showing a monthly increase in sales volume of 0.1% and a year-on-year increase of 0.4%, while accumulated sales in the 12 months through May 2026 were up 1.4% on the preceding 12-month period. Of the eight product categories measured by the Ibge, five posted monthly increases in sales. The greatest monthly rises in May were in books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (+15.2%), fabrics, clothing, and footwear (+3.1%), and furniture and home appliances (+2.7%). Monthly decreases were registered in office supplies and information and communications equipment (-1.7%), supermarkets, food, drinks, and smoking products (-1.5%), and other items for personal and domestic use (-0.3%).
