Milei clashes with Church in contrasting independence addresses

Argentina’s President Javier Milei commemorated the 210th anniversary of the country’s independence in the north-eastern province of Tucumán on 9 July with an address designed to draw a direct parallel to his administration. The archbishop of Buenos Aires, Jorge García Cuerva, meanwhile, delivered a homily in Tucumán cathedral during a service attended by Milei, which was punctuated by thinly veiled criticisms of the head of state’s polarising discourse.
