*Mexico’s foreign minister,
Roberto Velasco Álvarez, has met Panama’s President
José Raúl Mulino in Mexico City (CMDX) ahead of a scheduled meeting between Mulino and Mexico’s President
Claudia Sheinbaum, which is due to take place today (15 July). According to a social media post by Mexico’s foreign ministry, the two countries are seeking to strengthen diplomatic ties in bilateral issues as well as boost trade and investment, agriculture, and development cooperation. A press release by Panama’s presidency notes that Mulino’s visit will address cooperation in the realms of science and technology as well as multilateral issues, while Mulino plans to promote Mexico’s participation in the International Economic Forum-Latin America and Caribbean, a high-level summit organised by the Latin American development bank (CAF), which is taking place in Panama next year. Mulino is heading up a delegation which includes Foreign Minister
Javier Martínez Acha, as well as the ministers of trade and industry (
Julio Moltó); agricultural development (
Roberto Linares); and Canal affairs (
José Ramón Icaza). The two countries have a free trade agreement (FTA) which has been in effect since 2015.
