Claudia Sheinbaum has welcomed
Seiji Kuraishi, the president of the Mexico-Japan Economic Committee, a binational business council, alongside members of the Japan Business Federation, an economic organisation comprising representatives from 1,574 Japanese companies, 106 national industrial associations and 47 regional economic organisations, and Japan’s ambassador to Mexico,
Kozo Honsei, at the national palace to discuss investment in Mexico. On social media, Sheinbaum explained that “
in our country, there are 1,600 Japanese companies that generate 350,000 direct jobs”. On the same day, Mexico’s Economy Minister
Marcelo Ebrard led a meeting with members of the Japan Business Federation and the Japanese embassy in Mexico to “
strengthen economic cooperation and address the main challenges facing Japanese companies” in Mexico. An economy ministry press release notes that they also discussed the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) “
in the framework of the dialogue on the trade and investment environment in North America”. Alongside Mexican and Japanese officials, many CEOs and representatives of Japanese companies such as car manufacturers Honda Motor Company and Toyota Motor Corporation and airline All Nippon Airways were present. The Japanese delegation highlighted “
the importance of working together to strengthen the presence of Japanese companies in Mexico”, while Ebrard reiterated “
his commitment to maintaining an ongoing dialogue, facilitating investment and strengthening competitiveness and value chains in Mexico”. The economy ministry equally explained that it is monitoring 39 Japanese investment projects and that over the last five months “
90% of the business challenges identified have been addressed”.
