Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) estimates it will import 1.15m tonnes (t) of sugar from Mexico in the 2026-2027 period. According to a government statement, this would represent an increase of 512% from the amount expected in the 2025-2026 period and would equate to M$4.76bn (US$272.3m) for the national sugar industry, comprising 170,000 sugar producers. The government said that this forecast was outlined in a July USDA report that cites agricultural supply and demand. It stated that it was the result of talks with the US that began in November 2025 during the visit of US Secretary of Agriculture
Brooke Rollins to Mexico, during which
she met with Sheinbaum.
“This result confirms that through dialogue it is possible to build important agreements to benefit agricultural producers and food consumers in Mexico and the US,” reads the statement.
