In brief: Businesses urge more US-Brazil dialogue to avoid tariffs

*The American Chamber of Commerce in Brazil (Amcham Brazil), Brazil’s national confederation for the industrial sector (CNI), and the US Chamber of Commerce have sent a joint letter to the US and Brazilian governments advocating for the negotiation of a short-term agreement to avoid the imposition of new tariffs on Brazil. This comes as the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced a proposal last month to apply 25% tariffs on many goods, due to claims of Brazil’s unfair trade practices. As an immediate priority, the business groups propose more dialogue focusing on goals such as expanding market access for selected products, including industrial inputs, capital goods, and products related to energy and digital infrastructure; deepening regulatory cooperation in sectors such as the automotive and healthcare sectors; supporting an extension of the World Trade Organization (WTO) moratorium on customs duties on electronic transmissions; reducing Brazil’s patent application backlog; advancing cooperation on critical minerals; and fully implementing bilateral anti-corruption agreements. The USTR is expected to decide by 15 July whether to apply the proposed tariffs to Brazil.
