PERU: Sánchez concedes defeat
A month after Peru’s 7 June presidential run-off, left-wing candidate Roberto Sánchez conceded defeat to Keiko Fujimori. Sánchez did not, however, drop his claims of electoral irregularities which he says saw the overseas vote manipulated to deliver a Fujimori victory. His concession will therefore contribute little to Fujimori’s goal of restoring political stability. Nevertheless, she will be relieved that he has formed a coalition in congress to oppose her agenda, rather than going ahead with the call for massive protests that he had previously threatened.
