VENEZUELA: Reconstruction costs pile up

Two weeks on from the catastrophic twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on 24 June, the focus is shifting from searching for survivors to rebuilding. President Delcy Rodríguez’s government has announced that funds will be forthcoming from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and the Latin American development bank (CAF), among other entities. Even so, it is unclear whether the Rodríguez administration will receive anything close to the cost of repairing an estimated US$37bn in damage to buildings and infrastructure.
