In brief: Brazil’s gov’t cracks down on illegal gambling operations

*Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has issued a decree which creates procedures to freeze the accounts of unauthorised betting firms, block new transactions, and enable illegal betting revenue to be transferred to the national public security fund (FNSP) following an administrative process. According to a statement on the website of the presidency, the measures in the decree add to a wider effort to cut off revenues for organised crime, following the promulgation of an anti-gang law in March. Under the decree, the finance ministry’s gambling regulator (SPA) will be able to order financial institutions and payment providers to freeze funds related to unauthorised betting firms. The case will then be assessed by the national public security secretariat (Senasp) at the ministry of justice and public security. Any illegal revenue will be transferred to the FNSP “for the financing of actions to prevent and combat crime”, according to the statement.
