In brief: Argentina’s trade surplus continues to rise

 *Argentina’s national statistics institute (Indec) has released its latest trade figures, showing a monthly trade surplus of US$3.50bn in May. This is up from US$2.71bn in April and US$608m in May last year. Exports in May 2026 totalled US$9.54bn, up from US$8.91bn the previous month and from US$7.10bn in May 2025, while the total monthly import value stood at US$6.03bn, down from US$6.20bn in April and US$6.49bn in May 2025. Significant year-on-year increases were registered in exports of fuels and energy, with a monthly export value of US$1.75bn (+167.1%), followed by a more modest increase in primary goods, with exports totalling US$2.44bn (+22.5%). Argentina’s top export destination in May this year was China, with a monthly export value of US$1.50bn (+78.9% year-on-year), followed by Brazil (US$1.19bn, +2.9%), and the US (US$878m, +76.0%).
