In brief: Mexico’s gov’t hails progress in affordable housing scheme

*Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced that 274,000 homes are currently under construction as part of her government’s Vivienda para el Bienestar (Housing for wellbeing) affordable housing programme. The scheme has a target of building 1.8m new homes benefitting 7m people by the end of Sheinbaum’s term in 2030. The programme, which guarantees access to housing for those earning up to the equivalent of two minimum wages, has also seen the disbursement of 579,000 loans and grants for home improvements, as well as 293,000 deeds, certificates of full payment, and loan cancellation documents issued. “Never in history has there been a programme for families earning less than two minimum wages – never,” said Sheinbaum in a press conference, stating that access to housing was now treated as a right of the Mexican people.
