CHILE: Opposition denounces crackdown on protest

Chile’s left-wing opposition Partido Socialista (PS) and Frente Amplio (FA) accused the far-right government led by President José Antonio Kast of championing a heavy-handed approach to policing of protests after a march convened by the main national student union Confederación de Estudiantes de Chile (Confech), resulted in at least 35 arrests and multiple injuries. Confech was protesting against the controversial Escuelas Protegidas bill approved by congress a week earlier designed to combat violence in schools, and cuts to the education budget.
