BRAZIL: Supreme court removes obstacle for controversial railway
The supreme court (STF) has upheld a 2017 law that reduced the size of the Jamanxim natural conservation area, in the northern state of Pará, clearing an obstacle that had stood in the way of the controversial ‘Ferrogrão’ railway project. The stalled construction project is a major initiative backed by the powerful agribusiness sector, given its potential to facilitate the transport of crops to Brazil’s northern ports, but it has received fierce criticism over the years from environmental groups.
