The conservative regional leader of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, of Spain’s right-wing opposition Partido Popular (PP), cut her recent visit to Mexico short, claiming the government had been threatening her and promoting boycotts of events she was due to attend. Her premature departure marked the end of a controversial trip which had seen Ayuso pay homage to Spanish conquistadors and portray the conquest of Mexico as a positive for the country.
